Attack Of The Krystal Sphere Mix

I didn't think I was that in to disco but I might have to go to Manchester and break in to Illum Sphere's house for the track list to this mix, it's got me dancing around my house like a fool. Krystal Kleer will be playing at Hoya Hoya this April - check it out if you're in Manchester or aren't afraid of traveling north.

Ty "Emotions" video clip and album launch party

Teaser clip from Ty's new video for "Emotions" (out now on iTunes). Apparently the full version is animated - looking forward to seeing it! I'll also be making the trek south of the river for the launch party on 16th April.

From the man who coined the phrase "internet balls". I watched this through my fingers but I do love Phonte for keeping it real and being himself at all times.

Phonte speaks on Little Brother/9th Wonder from Phonte Coleman on Vimeo.

After watching that I'm not blogging the song "Star" that kicked all this stuff off because of the bad taste in my mouth the back story left, sorry. Instead, enjoy the new Strong Arm Steady video for "Best of Times" featuring Phonte.

Video: Richy Pitch featuring M.anifest - Blackstar

I've been meaning to check out the new video from my lovely friend Richy Pitch with Ghanaian MC M.Anifest for a while now.

He informed me "The song is about Kwame's (M.anifest) early life in Ghana, and his eventual movement to the USA. It's the first single from my Ghanaian LP." It comes out officially on BBE as a single and video on April 27th, and I believe the album is called "Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch".

I imagine Kidkanevil will be feeling this video...

I am still trying to work out how I feel about this and the album, but in a way I could kiss Miss Badu for that. At least she's got me thinking.

Video: The Invisible - Jacob & the Angel

This slid under the radar somehow - new video from one of my favourite groups, The Invisible. More from them shortly...

Mulatu Astatke "Yekermo Sew"

I'm at SXSW in Texas so the blog has runneth a little dry this week - many apologies but it will be worth the wait, trust me! I just realised that I haven't posted this gem that was sent over by Jonathan Kim earlier in the week, which is criminal. The Timeless series is amazing, I'm lucky enough to have seen them on preview and will be bringing you some more news about it soon...

New album from Emanative "Time"

I first came across Emanative through the beautiful masterpiece he and Ahu made called "Turn Your Lights On" - I play it all the time so I'm quite excited about his new album "Time" coming out in April on Futuristica Music -

Forget about the time that is dictated to you by the dawning and setting of the sun, death and birth, the revolution of the earth, the hands on the clock face or a sky full of stars...

Make some time

The album launch is on May 6th at Favela Chic.

Gonzales 'Jazz Chess' Movie with Peaches, Tiga & Feist

Erm, yes you heard right - "Jazz Chess" the movie.

It's actually called "Ivory Tower", and stars eccentric genius Chilly Gonzales as Hershall Graves - an eccentric genius - 'who invents an intuitive and collaborative style of play called "jazz chess."' I know some jazz heads who just came in their pants at this news but wait; it gets better.

Opposing him in chess, as well as in love, is his materialistic brother Thaddeus (played by electro producer Tiga); the object of the brothers' shared affection, a performance artist, is played by longtime Gonzales collaborator Peaches. Also appearing as a duo of "Canadian Chess Cyberchannel" journalists are comedy rocker Little Hamm and Gonzales' longtime friend and creative partner, Feist.

They are even creating the script as they go ("Jazz film-making"). It should be ready this Autumn...

In the meantime make sure you download the "Pianist Envy" mixtape - a hilarious and brilliant must have. Download HERE

J Dilla "Safety Dance" x Donut Shop

Kinda wish Stones Throw would stop making all this sexy vinyl I want but don't actually have the record player to justify buying, and couldn't even pre-order until May even if I wanted to. They should definitely make a pop up store selling actual donuts and the vinyl...

Serato and Stones Throw have teamed with the J Dilla Estate for the official J Dilla Serato release, Donut Shop. This is 2 discs with six J Dilla tracks, 2 sides with Serato Control Tone (for use with Serato Scratch Live DJ software), and 2 donut slipmats in a package designed by Studio No.1. This will be released May 10th (the day after Mother's day--what's up Ma Dukes?). Pre-order is available now.

Download -  J Dilla - “Safety Dance” (MP3) *Not too sure about this, could be a grower.

Maverick Sabre "These Walls" (Jail Tales)

I came across this over at Semtex's blog and thought it was a great project by the BBC (which could have gone one of two ways but seems to have been handled well) -

"the Jail Tales project, an ambitious mix of multiplatform content fronted by Ashley Walters, an actor and rapper who knows firsthand what it's like to be young and in prison. Jail Tales consists of a series of viral You Tube videos, short films, animated shorts, exclusive music performances and a gritty photo gallery on Facebook. Ashley will also present a Radio 1 documentary on prison and a downloadable BBC Three podcast."

Check out this video of  Maverick Sabre performing a song inspired by the series.

I recommend heading over to the site to check out more videos, the one with Ashley Walters in particular.

Bobby McFerrin: the Power of the Pentatonic Scale

Don't watch this video if you are at work or somewhere you can't sing along. Also, don't watch this if you're too much of a stick in the mud to sing along - I have to say it made my evening. I'll definitely be going to see Bobby McFerrin's new show VOCabuLarieS (sounds incredible), at the Barbican on the 29th May - tickets HERE.

Poop, the George Clinton Pass, and some nice beards...

This week I was too ill to blog, so this is a little hip hop video catch up.

Elzhi "Deep" > Big tune! Poop video.

Big Boi - Fo Yo Sorrows ft.Too Short & George Clinton > Big tune. OK video. Luckily it gets the George Clinton pass.

Ski Beatz - S.T.A.L.L.E.Y. (feat. Stalley). > Nice beards.

Video: Gorillaz "Superfast Jellyfish" feat. Gruff Rhys & De La Soul

I am always honest here - and I am just not feeling the new Gorillaz album "Plastic Beach". It's like something I bought from Ikea, all the pieces should fit together but they just don't quite*. Perhaps other people are better at piecing them together. The more amazing visuals that appear to accompany it the more I wish it was being released as an incredible animated film rather than an album... Since I'm still trying to make it work I'm posting this video and watching it a few times. If that doesn't work I'm giving up though.

*FYI I am actually really good at DIY, I just liked the metaphor.

MF Doom at The Roundhouse (Taste of Sonar)

I wasn't going to review this because of the old adage "if you haven't got anything nice to say...". However - I did come across some photos over at Stones Throw by Matt Cheetham of WATCHLOOKSEE that were better than the gig so I thought I may as well post those.

We all had a moment when, after a 45 minute wait listening to rubbish dance music, a bunch of guys ran out on stage and I turned to my friends saying, "errr - who's the slim white guy in the mask?!". I think it was a trick, as the man himself came out shortly afterwards, and my brain stopped for a moment to note - it was really him. Doom was pretty funny too, waving his British passport on stage, and telling us it wasn't really him, that he was at home. I didn't hear half of the songs I would have liked to, and couldn't hear half of the songs he performed, but there was at least something exciting about hearing his voice live.
I have to say I wasn't expecting the show to be amazing, reclusive hip hop types don't tend to blow your mind on stage, so part of my reason for going was to celebrate the music of an artist I've listened to and loved for years for the first time on a massive soundsystem in a beautiful venue with lots of like-minded fans. That was the part that let me down the most - the music was almost completely inaudible, and the only way I can describe the crowd was "drunk, angry sausage". Props to the guy in the homemade cardboard mask though.
I was down to stay to watch Matthew Herbert's DJ set afterwards, which I noticed began with Gbosa Gbosa! by Afrikan Boy, but everyone virtually ran outside and Matthew was left playing to a crowd of about 20 people. Not quite sure on the thinking behind the programming there but perhaps it will work in the sunshine of Barcelona at Sonar Festival...

Nipsey Hussle, “The Hussle”

So if Snoop were to hand over to someone, I get the impression it might be Nipsey Hussle - who can actually rap better than him but Snoop is Snoop (lifelong fan over here). I'll be checking for this guy this year I think - though I'm not expecting to be bowled over by a vast array of subject matter I'm still interested to see where his journey leads.

Today the internet belongs to... Bonobo

...and deservedly so. It must be really annoying for an artist when some of your fans make you seem less appealing, and the Brighton beach "chillout" crew definitely had a negative effect on the way I thought about Bonobo's music, as trustafarians played it to death in organic cafes, their friends doing poi outside with... anyway you get the picture - not his fault.

Loving the gorgeous vocals of PMOI favourite Andreya Triana on "Eyes Down", the track in the video above (are birds of prey the thing for 2010?), and I just pinched this rather brilliant free download from NME of "We Could Forever". As if that wasn't enough Ninja Tune sent over a mini mix of the album this morning which you can download HERE.

The album, "Black Sands" is available for pre-order now, I'm really feeling everything I've heard from it so far.

Solange "Under Construction"

Seems Solange Knowles is on a mission to discover her own sound, as far away from her sisters as possible, and she's experimenting. I'm not sure it's there yet (for me) but I find her interesting.

Video: Matthew Herbert "Leipzig"

I can't imagine the process of making something entirely by yourself - Matthew wrote, recorded, sang, and played all instruments on his forthcoming album "One One", the first part of his trilogy of albums coming out this year. I've heard it and it's exactly what you might expect - interesting, understated, and slightly outside of the box. More on that later...

Trent Reznor Interview: Business Model Innovation in Music

This isn't remotely new, it's an interview from April last year with Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, but after a lot of conversations I've had recently I feel it's relevant. I realise that a lot of the people who visit this site make music, and if you do, I would highly recommend you watch this.

We're all trying to work out how to make money working in the music industry in future, and the obvious answer seems to be by offering something that can't be bought for free - be that experience, connection, skills, or just being part of something. There's no one size fits all solution but I find Trent Reznors' points really interesting - there aren't many people who have sat on both sides of the fence and tried out as many options as he has.

From the man who brought you "Skeen"...

I've watched this way too many times now and still can't stop laughing. Skillit is just hilarious.

Mayer Hawthorne - I Wish It Would Rain (Video)

The juggernaut that is the Mayer Hawthorne campaign continues. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Yarah Bravo "Good Girls Rarely Make History" Tour

Yarah Bravo is one of the hardest working performers in hip hop, I really don't know how she does it, but she grinds so hard and with such passion. I have the feeling it's something to do with how much she loves what she does; her live shows are always super creative, she has a legion of loyal fans, and she's a real instigator.

Anyway, Yarah sent me over some footage from her recent tour, it looks like it was a blast. More on the lady to come soon...
