Will, AKA The Gas Lamp Killer is just such a lovely guy, I'm gutted I didn't make it to what was apparently a legendary FWD session last Sunday (I was at J-Live @ Cargo), but I did bump in to Will & the equally lovely Illum Sphere in the street outside to say hello and the entire area was coated in beat heads, some walking past drunkenly shrieking at him "the muthaf*cking Gas Lamp Killllleeerrrrr, yeahhhh!!!" which was hilarious if a bit unnerving. Dwele - Travellin' Girl

I first came across Dwele via Yahoo! Radio strangely enough - and have been hooked ever since. Having seen him perform a few times the video below is a perfect example of the cool calm that both Dwele's vocals and persona bring. Also, check out his YouTube Channel, he's started directing his own videos and they're pretty good...I just want to know when he's coming back to London!

Q-Tip - Kamaal The Abstract (Download)

Finally, the album Q-Tip was meant to release in 2002 after Amplified but his label didn't feel was commercial enough "Kamaal The Abstract" (clue is in the name!), will be out on 15th September on Battery Records. At the time Tip said -

I went to their 'Ted Baker sponsored' Pure Groove in store yesterday and was totally blown away. Being in their presence is like being at carnival, when carnival was deserving of all the good hype it received. Check them out folks.

Just got this new beauty from uber modest and delightful UK artist Stac. Seems 'quirky' solo female artists are growing on trees at the mo (in the press anyhoo), so the earholes are mighty grateful for the freshness of her trademark lush harmonic work, tasty hooks combined with the rude beat-work of Afrosaxon on this joint. Check out singles Balls Bounce on 7 inch/digi download (plus nifty remix from Bonobo) and heartbreaking Glory out in the Autumn on WahWah 45's. Catch her at the Jazz Cafe this Friday night. It should be incendiary if her rumoured track record with setting fire to an old music teacher is anything to go by....its the quiet ones you got to watch out for..Enjoy!

I'm late on this one, been busy as usual, but had to work backwards a couple of days and post this. Directed by Matt Koza, this has to be one of the most interesting videos I've seen this year, and in fact I had to watch it twice to really get a sense of it, for a great track from Leave It All Behind. Her most recent album Gravity At Last came out in September '08, and she has been touring over the summer (which was unfortunately cut short due to an ectopic pregnancy). I haven't seen anything that says she'll be coming to the UK any time soon but we can cross our fingers! In the meantime here's her most recent video - Lonely

Ash - The Alphabet Tour

I think Ash was the first ever live gig I went to (on my own), at the Oxford Zodiac in 1996 I believe - Rick the drummer was wearing a green dress & I was determined to marry Tim Wheeler (lead singer). Showing my age. I love the idea they've come up with for "The Alphabet Tour", hitting loads of small towns in an A-Z of the UK, so fans will get to see them in a smaller venue like I did all those years ago...

The tour will be used to launch the A-Z Series, starting with True Love 1980 on October 12. The series contains a collection of 26 limited edition 7″ and digital download singles released fortnightly after the first.

Jamie T - Chaka Demus

For some reason I don't think I've ever posted about Jamie T, but I've liked him for years. There's something about his music that feels like the logical next step from the kind of indie music I was listening to in the 90s as a kid which featured hip hop influenced drum patterns and loops but still had a distinctly British sound...he just sounds like a London kid. His new album Kings and Queens comes out on 7th September.

VV Brown - Game Over (Video)

I was very much on the fence at first with VV Brown - I just couldn't work out if I thought much of her music or not. After numerous posts of that nature I've realised I'm not posting audio, just video, and as a visual creature she's certainly likeable. I do believe she probably has a lot of talent but seems to be turning in to a singing pair of legs, much like Amerie, but with an avant-garde, highly styled twist. I suppose there are worse things.

JME - Over Me

Try not to faint, I know this isn't my usual fare but I'm really feeling the production & overall vibe on this track from JME, my face is just screwing itself and I would love to hear it on a big system. It's out on iTunes 20th September.

Soul Power After Party

Last night I attended the "Soul Power" after party put together by Put Me On It, Pause & Shook magazine. If you haven't seen the movie, you're crazy. If you've seen the movie, live in London and didn't come to the party, you're even crazier. This party really made up for the fact that I wasn't available in September 1974. The music, people and vibe was so on point I heard numerous people asking was this party a regular night. There was nothing regular about last night, the vibe was so good it felt like I partied with family.

Hudson Mohawke's debut album Butter will be released on Warp on 12th October...

“the Butter idea, as well as just wanting to give the album a simple striking name, also came from my attempt at a sort of prog rock meets vintage soul meets sleazy R’n’B aesthetic - Isaac Hayes ‘hot buttered soul’. I really wanted the title to somehow emphasise the arrangements on the record, how I’ve tried to create songs as opposed to just computer driven arrangements, how the record flows. I think compared to some of my earlier production it’s smoother in some ways as well, like butter for the eardrums.”

I just scooped this over at Pinboard (have you voted for them in the Dazed Raw Blog Awards yet?), and I'm so glad people are paying tribute to artists whilst they're alive and can enjoy it...on that note I thought I'd share one of my favourite Diana Ross songs...she recorded it in 1991 and apparently redid it with Westlife a few years ago (wtf?!) so I had to dig really hard to find the original video, featuring her two gorgeous sons Ross & Evan. The Soul Power Party 16th Aug 2009!

It's been a minute since I put a party together but hopefully it'll be worth the wait! I'm so excited about this - Soul Power is the best film I've seen this year - moving, hilarious (occasionally feels like Spinal Tap but real), and of course the music is unbelievable - it's a must see. I hate watching amazing films like that then having nowhere to party afterwards - so I teamed up with Jez at Shook and Eric Lau at Pause and we did something about it. Pause and Shook Magazine have teamed up to present this special event inspired by the Soul Power film which came out this summer. Soul Power is an amazing documentary about the three day festival which took place in Zaire in '74 prior to the infamous Ali/ Foreman "Rumble in The Jungle" fight, and featured performances from James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, the Fania Allstars and more. We were so inspired by the film we wanted to encourage everyone to see it, then bring it to life and throw a party to celebrate powerful afro/funk/soul music from '74 to '09. It is also a launch party for Shook # 6 which features an article about the movie.

We've roped in Charlie Dark (Blacktronica), Eric Soul (Afrogroov), Bemi (Amplified), Eric Lau, Juven and H!ts (Pause) to provide the soundtrack to a serious hot and sweaty dancing session that will make the Market Place feel like Kinshasa whatever the English summer is saying. We will also have an Afroboutique and in-house stylist who will be making you all look fine - it is the Market Place after all.

To make sure you get the full experience we've arranged a limited number of discount tickets for a screening of the film at The Electric Cinema on Portobello Road earlier in the day at 3pm. Tickets go on sale on 7th August so we will send you the discount code as soon as we have it, or you can email me at info@putmeonit.com to receive it. Jay Electronica “Dear Moleskine” produced by Just Blaze Video Teaser

Busy weekend means I'm posting this late - was hoping no one would notice. I was wrong. The track below by Jay Electronica is produced by Just Blaze & is called “Dear Moleskine.” I can't help but laugh - my sister was berating herself for buying a Moleskine last week because it was No. 122 on Stuffwhitepeoplelike.com...maybe this will make her feel better. Apparently this is a part of a a collaborative film/music project between Jay Electronica’s The Dogon Society and DECON, and the footage was shot at Pashputinath Hindu Temple and The Bodinath Buddhist Temple in Kathmandu Nepal.

DJ IQ mix July 09

...I'm just posting it a little late, sorry. DJ IQ is really starting to make some waves at the moment, you may have caught him last month on Big Brother with Professor Green, his guest appearance on Mixed Nutz (Rinse FM), and you probably will catch him on 1Xtra throughout August on the hip hop mix show.

Rest In Peace Titus "Baatin" Glover of Slum Village

The details surrounding the tragic death of Baatin are as yet unknown, but I have posted the details reported in the press so far. PMOI's thoughts are with his family and friends, I can't imagine how terrible it must be to lose a loved one so young so suddenly, especially so soon after J. Dilla's passing.

Titus (Baatin) Glover, the Detroit rapper who co-founded the much-acclaimed Slum Village, has died.

The circumstances of his death remain unknown, associates said this afternoon. Baatin's body was found this morning in the 14000 block of Anglin Street and is at the Wayne County medical examiner's office, said family friend Ty Townson.

Funeral arrangements are not yet set. Friends and family members will gather for a public remembrance at 8 p.m. Sunday at Elements Gallery, 2125 Michigan Avenue in Detroit.

Baatin, who turned 35 in March, left Slum Village in 2002, later telling the Free Press he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He continued to record and play occasional solo dates before returning to the Slum fold for the group's upcoming album, "Villa Manifesto," due Sept. 22.

He was with the group for its gig at June's Rock the Bells Tour stop at DTE Energy Music Theatre, and last week performed in a video shoot for Slum's new single, "Cloud 9."

"This is just very shocking," said friend Biba Adams. "We were all hoping this would be the return of the original group."

"Baatin will be missed," Slum Village's T3 told the Free Press in a statement. "I'm glad we got a chance to work together before he passed. We lost another Slum soldier, a dear friend and a brother. He touched many lives."

Word of Baatin's passing circulated quickly this afternoon in music circles both locally and nationally, where Slum Village has long been an exalted name in underground hip-hop.

Fellow group founder James (J. Dilla) Yancey, Baatin's Pershing High School classmate, passed away in 2006.

"Deepest sympathy to the family, friends and fans of Slum Village on the passing of Baatin," said J. Dilla's mother, Maureen Yancey, in a statement. "We loved him and his kind heart and spirit will be forever be in our hearts."

Slum Village emerged in the late 1990s amid major street buzz, attracting fans of organic hip-hop and supported by acts such as A Tribe Called Quest. The group's 2000 national debut, "Fantastic Vol. 2" landed on critics' best-of lists and set the stage for Slum's highest-profile commercial release, "Trinity," two years later.

"He was a very spiritual brother," said Detroiter Khalid el-Hakim, founder of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. "He brought a spirituality to Detroit hip-hop that you didn't see with other artists. That's what he was known for."

Baatin is survived by his son, Michael Majesty Ellis, 9; his daughter, Aura Grace Glover, 1; his parents Howard and Grace Glover; and his sister, Tina Glover, all of Detroit.
